Description
Bighorn sheep get their name from the large, curved horns on the males, or rams. They are legendary for their ability to climb high, steep, rocky mountain areas. This image of a North American Bighorn Sheep was captured following a heavy winter snow storm in Northern New Mexico. Bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) were once widespread throughout New Mexico but in the last century their numbers were on serious decline. Starting in 2006 they were introduced into the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument along the Rio Grande and the Rio Grande Gorge just west of Taos.
